Climate crisis hits home: Chitral’s unnatural heatwave stuns region

Chitral (Staff Report) — The impacts of climate change are now ringing alarm bells in the once-cool mountain district of Chitral. This summer, the region is experiencing an unprecedented heatwave, with temperatures soaring to levels never seen before.

Over the past two days, the mercury has surged between 44°C to 46°C, at times surpassing the heat levels of traditionally warmer cities like Peshawar. Such extreme weather in a high-altitude valley known for its mild climate has raised serious concerns among environmentalists and local communities alike.

Experts warn that these rising temperatures are a clear indication of the intensifying effects of global warming, and if not addressed, could lead to severe consequences for the region’s fragile ecosystem, water resources, and agriculture.

The situation demands immediate attention to climate resilience, sustainable resource management, and long-term planning to safeguard the future of this vulnerable mountain district.
