UPPER CHITRAL: A major breakthrough was reached on Thursday as the Tehreek Mastuj–Broghil Road and the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa signed an agreement, bringing to an end the public long march that had been progressing from Broghil to Mastuj in support of the long-awaited Mastuj–Broghil Road project.
The agreement was finalized on July 23, 2026, while the public caravan was en route from Broghil through Mastuj towards the district headquarters in Booni.
Representing the provincial government, Deputy Speaker of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, Soraya Bibi, assured the protesters that their longstanding demand for the construction of the road would be fulfilled at the earliest.
Under the terms of the agreement, construction work on the 157-kilometre Mastuj–Broghil Road will officially commence on August 23, 2026, from Mastuj Chowk, subject to the completion of all legal and administrative formalities. Deputy Speaker Soraya Bibi has assumed responsibility for ensuring the implementation of the agreement.
As an initial phase, construction on 20 kilometres of the road will begin within one month. The agreement further states that all required legal procedures for this first phase—including administrative approval (Pre-PWDP) and the tendering process—will be completed within the stipulated timeframe, after which physical construction will commence.
The agreement also provides for the establishment of a monitoring committee to oversee the implementation of the project. The committee will be constituted by the Deputy Commissioner of Upper Chitral, who will issue a formal notification from his office.
The Tehreek Mastuj–Broghil Road has been campaigning for the construction of the strategic road for the past three years, describing it as a basic right of the people living in the remote border region. The proposed road, extending 157 kilometres, is expected to significantly improve connectivity, facilitate socio-economic development, and enhance access to essential services for communities in the area.
With the signing of the agreement, the protest movement declared a major victory and officially called off the long march, expressing hope that the government would fulfill its commitments within the agreed timeline.
