Moulana Fazlu Rehman Accuses Government of Deception over Madressah Bill

ISLAMABAD – Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has accused the government of reneging on commitments regarding the registration of religious seminaries, as the deadlock over the proposed Madressah Registration Bill persists.

A recent meeting between Maulana Fazlur Rehman and National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq failed to produce any resolution. The proposed legislation, initially passed alongside the 26th Amendment, was returned by then-President Asif Ali Zardari due to typographical errors. According to Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, the revised bill was promptly resubmitted after corrections were made.

JUI-F Senator Kamran Murtaza, however, disputed claims of presidential objections. “There is no objection by the president. Now, they are trying to backdate the issue after we raised it with Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on December 4,” the senator said. Citing Article 75 of the Constitution, he argued that the bill should have been automatically approved after remaining with the presidency for over 10 days.

The impasse underscores ongoing tensions between the JUI-F and the government over the regulation of religious seminaries.
