ISLAMABAD:The federal government has imposed a ban on the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM), citing its activities as a threat to national peace and security, according to a notification issued by the Interior Ministry. The PTM has been declared an “unlawful organization” under Section 11B of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1997.
The ministry’s statement claims that the PTM poses a “significant danger” to public order and safety, justifying the ban as a measure to prevent any further destabilization within the country.
The PTM, led by Manzoor Pashteen, has long been a vocal advocate for the rights of the Pashtun community, particularly highlighting issues such as extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances. While the movement has gained substantial support among Pashtuns, it has faced mounting criticism from the government, which alleges that its activities fuel anti-state sentiments and jeopardize security in sensitive regions.
