SRSP launches restoration of 2.5 megawatt hydropower project in Kumrat valley, Upper Dir

UPPER DIR: The Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP), in collaboration with the European Union Pakistan (EU), has launched the upgradation and restoration of the 2.5-megawatt hydropower project in the scenic Kumrat Valley of Upper Dir.

Once completed, the project will provide clean and affordable electricity to 4,044 households, 150 hotels, and numerous small businesses, significantly boosting local economic activities. It will also help reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by 7,200 tons, contributing to environmental protection and the fight against climate change.

The initiative aims to promote renewable energy, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and encourage sustainable economic growth and eco-tourism in the region.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held recently, attended by Member of the National Assembly Sahibzada Sibghatullah, Deputy Commissioner Upper Dir, SRSP Chief Executive Officer Shahzada Masoodul Mulk, CEO RSPN, SRSP Board Members, local political and social leaders, and community representatives.

Local residents welcomed the project, describing it as a promising step toward the region’s progress, and lauded SRSP’s consistent efforts for community development.

Speaking on the occasion, MNA Sahibzada Sibghatullah praised SRSP’s outstanding contribution to the development of remote areas and termed the organization a role model for other institutions. He assured his full support for the successful completion of the project.

This initiative is expected to usher in a new era of clean energy, economic opportunities, and sustainable development for the people of Kumrat Valley.
