DROSH: Takal Welfare Organization (TWO), with financial support from the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) and in collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme (PMYP), Paigham-e-Pakistan, and the Centre of Excellence for Countering Violent Extremism (CVE), organized a special event to mark World Environment Day 2026.
More than 50 participants attended the event, including government officials, community leaders, women, youth, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, members of village organizations, and representatives of the local community.
The chief guest on the occasion was Drosh Agricultural Extension Officer Sikandar Khan, who highlighted the growing threats posed by climate change, the importance of conserving natural resources, and the need to promote climate-smart agricultural practices. He noted that environmentally sustainable farming methods not only help communities cope with climate-related challenges but also contribute significantly to agricultural productivity and the stability of rural economies.
Addressing the gathering, political and social figure Raziat Baullah, social activist Kamal Abdul Jamil, and linguist and environmental expert Ismatullah Khan emphasized that the impacts of climate change are being felt more severely in mountainous regions. They stressed the need for collective action, public awareness, and sustainable development strategies at the local level to effectively address these challenges.
A key highlight of the event was the inauguration of a women-led Climate-Smart Tunnel Farming Project. The initiative aims to economically empower rural women, enhance food security, and strengthen the resilience of local communities against the adverse effects of climate change.
Speakers described the project as an effective, replicable, and sustainable model for promoting women’s economic empowerment, climate adaptation, and sustainable agricultural development. They expressed hope that the initiative would further encourage environment-friendly farming practices and contribute to the overall well-being of communities in the region.
At the conclusion of the event, participants reaffirmed their commitment to environmental protection, the promotion of climate action, and continued collective efforts towards sustainable, inclusive, and environmentally responsible development in Lower Chitral.
