ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Interior has begun consultations with relevant stakeholders as part of efforts to further tighten social media regulations aimed at preventing the growing incidents of child exploitation and obscenity.
According to sources, a proposal was presented during a special meeting to introduce an age limit for the use of social media platforms. Effective measures were also proposed to control obscene content allegedly being circulated under the labels of “family viewership” and “family vlogging.”
In addition, Pakistan is seriously considering the option of imposing restrictions or bans on certain social media platforms, similar to measures adopted by several other countries.
Senior officials from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), and federal and provincial police are expected to participate in an important meeting at the Ministry of Interior.
The meeting will review cases involving child exploitation and obscene content in detail and examine strict social media policies adopted by various countries, including Australia.
In the current digital and internet-driven era, government policies and official consultations concerning online security, child protection, and cyber laws are receiving increasing public attention.
Such developments are expected to provide an indication of possible changes in Pakistan’s digital media regulatory framework.
